Every other year I’m lucky enough to spend Christmas in the North of Sweden, in a beautiful city called Luleå. From freezing temperatures, to all day darkness, it’s a culture shock from the UK but an amazing experience.
The traditional Christmas dinner is a Julbord, featuring ham, sausages, meatballs, salmon, eggs and caviar.
Fortunately, Sweden is quite forward thinking with veganism and you can find vegan versions of most of the usual dishes. Some of the dishes we’ve had on our julbord include Lentil and Tofu Salad, potato gratin, and roasted brussels with almonds. Recipes coming soon.
One highlight of the Swedish Christmas is all of the homemade bakes and treats like lussebullar (saffron buns) and knäck (Swedish toffee). These can all easily be made vegan by using alternatives to dairy.
Lussebullar are a delicious Swedish bake which are enjoyed best with a glass of glögg.
The cafes and restaurants in Sweden often have a vegan option available. Some of the bigger chains include Espresso House and Waynes Coffee. Both serve vegan milk, cream, and cakes.
Fast food restaurants are also quite easy to eat at. MAX burgers is their most popular burger chain. It usually has a few options, although unfortunately, the choices have reduced over the years. Bastard Burgers are another option, they tend to have more choice than MAX and some tasty milkshakes too. You will find a lot of the kebab houses serve Oumph kebab, and the pizza places will offer vegan cheese.
Finding fully vegan restaurants is a little trickier. In Luleå, we haven’t been able to find any fully vegan food places but the location, scenery and activities makes it all worth the visit.
